Sounds Surround

Know Before

Numerous ecological interactions occur surrounding a creek. Listening closely can help you to identify living organisms in the area. An ecology sound map can help you to focus on the wide variety of sounds around you and where they come from.

Get Out The Door

  1. Mark the center of a piece of paper with your location.

  2. When a sound is heard, draw a representative mark (squiggle, dash, zig zag) on the card to indicate the direction and the distance the sound was heard from.

  3. Spend 5 minutes or more in the same location adding to the map.

Think Some More

Are the sources of the sounds living or non-living?

Thinking about interactions in the environment, consider how living elements are connected. What food web interactions could exist amongst the critters around a stream?

How might these organisms be impacted by the creek and the quality of water in it?

Can you detect sounds from humans?
